Student learning, community enhancement, sustainability, and connectivity – these are the goals that shaped the design of Lynnwood High School, winner of the 2010 James D. MacConnell Award for outstanding educational planning and design. Relocating from a 1950s dispersed campus devoid of a sense of place, to a new facility focused on student social and academic needs, restored school spirit and community pride.
The school is designed around the Agora – Greek for “marketplace” – an unencumbered, rhythmic space that supports social interaction at multiple levels by functioning as a cafeteria, lobby, performance venue, study hall, community event space, and the heart of the school. Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) with dedicated science labs, teacher planning areas, and admin spaces are situated around the light-filled Agora. Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces, adjacent to the Agora and visibly accessible to students, illuminate real world learning.
The school offers plentiful opportunities to develop enduring community support and participation. Forming community partnership, athletic fields and tennis courts are shared with the City for year round youth and adult leagues and the gymnasium serves as an emergency shelter. Academic areas and PLC’s around the Agora can operate independently – supporting community education opportunities – as well as use by government, district, religious, business, and local organizations. CTE programs also function as real community businesses, offering services in Horticulture, Carpentry, and Culinary Arts.
